COPYRIGHT < Back to 'Intellectual Property'

Copyright, like unregistered design right, comes into existence when an original work is created and recorded.  There is no need for any form of registration with a registering authority.  Amongst other things, copyright provides protection against copying for literary, dramatic, musical and artistic works.  Generally, the protection lasts for seventy years from the death of the creator of the copyright work, although, this can vary according to the type of work.

Copyright is not the powerful tool for protecting industrial designs it once was.  For the protection of industrial designs, it is usually necessary to rely on design registration and unregistered design rights.

In the world of technology, copyright can be used to protect against the copying of computer programs.  It also provides protection against copying for technical reports and manuals, parts lists and drawings.
