The main forms of intellectual property right are

Patents
Protect technical innovations in processes and products.  In general, until it has been covered by a patent application an invention should not be disclosed to third parties, except in confidence.

Trade Marks
Protect the indicators by which one trader’s goods are distinguished form another’s.

Designs
Registered and unregistered design rights protect the appearance of products, including both the shape of a product and/or any decoration that may be applied to it.  For the European Union, it is possible to file an application to register a design up to twelve months after the first public disclosure of the design.

Copyright
Protects a very wide range of things against copying, of which the most relevant to the world of technology and design are computer programs, technical manuals, reports, parts lists and drawings.
